Amputee Advice
Learning from other amputees is a great resource! Read the advice below from a variety of amputees who live in Montana and are a part of this group.
“There's more to being an amp than using a prosthesis. Remember that we are more than the sum of of parts. You are still you! Stay active and have fun. There's a big difference between I "have" to learn to do everything all over again versus I "get" to learn to do everything all over again.... you get all of your first times back again so enjoy the journey!”
-Hip Disarticulation amputee for over 20 years
“1, you never quit, 2 if you fall down five times you get up six times, 3 you need to understand that the people who make your prosthetics are human, not God. They can make you something that will work to let you have a better life, but it is not what God gave you to start with, 4, you are the only one that can make the decision to live with a little bit of pain to be able to keep going with your life.”
-AK amputee for 53 years
“Have a very good sense of humor! Life is challenging enough, there’s no need to see yourself as different or a burden. You are able to do all things able bodied people are, it just may take more effort.”
-Right leg AK, left leg BK for whole life (33 years)
“Some days are tough; some days are easy. You can experience long bouts of tough times and long bouts of easy times. The most important part is to keep moving forward and find support when you need it because we all need a little help sometimes!”
